A Day Set Aside to Create

Every once in a while, you need space to create without expectation.

No timeline.
No pressure.
Just the freedom to explore.

I recently spent the day in Plano, Texas with fellow photographer Melissa Vaughan doing exactly that. While my studio is based in Sherman, Texas, I always love the opportunity to collaborate. No shot list, just light, color, and the willingness to see where it would take us.

Playing with Light, Color, and Texture

This session became a study in light.

Reflections. Subtle color shifts. Small movements that completely changed the feel of an image.

It wasn’t about perfection. It was about paying attention and letting simple elements come together in a way that felt intentional and a little unexpected.

The Freedom of No Expectations

When there’s no expectation, there’s room to take risks.

To try something new.
To push past what’s familiar.

After 16 years, that matters.

Because growth doesn’t come from repeating what already works. It comes from stepping just outside of it.

Why This Kind of Work Matters

This is the part most people don’t see, but it’s what shapes everything I do.

It sharpens how I see light.
How I compose.
How I create images that feel natural and refined at the same time.

And that doesn’t stay here.

It carries into every senior session, every family portrait, every branding shoot.

You may never see days like this.
But you feel them.

In the way your images come together.
In the way the light feels effortless.
In the way your portraits feel elevated without trying too hard.

That difference is never accidental.

Simple. Beauty. Forever

Even when I experiment, the foundation stays the same.

Simple.
Beautiful.
Timeless.

Because great portraiture isn’t about chasing trends, it’s about refining your vision so that what you create today still feels just as meaningful years from now.

And sometimes, the work that makes that possible is the work no one ever sees.

If you’ve been thinking about updating your portraits, I’d love to help you create something that feels just as intentional.
